2010 Dates Announced
This summer Dartmouth Yacht Club is offering an adult learn to sail program aboard a 36' sailboat with emphasis on seamanship and safety. Courses will be taught by a CYA certified instructor and offered in two different formats. Students who successfully complete the course in either format parts will be awarded the Canadian Yachting Association's Basic Cruising Standard. The objective of this Standard is to develop sufficient skills "to be able to cruise safely in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sloop rigged keelboat of 6 to 10 metres in moderate wind and sea conditions by day".
This course will be taught in 2 parts. Basic Cruising Part A will teach terminology, safety procedures, and small vessel handling under both sail and power. Basic Cruising Part B will expand on the skills learned in Part A. Students will learn about anchoring, navigation, reducing sail or reefing, and weather. Each session will be taught in one evening lecture and one weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of on water practical lessons. Classroom sessions will run from 6:30 to 9:30 pm on weekdays and the practical sessions will be from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. There will now be 4 Part A sessions run, and 2 Part B Session

- Basic Cruising Part A: DYC Members $260.00, non-members $280.00 (includes reference material)
- Basic Cruising Part B: DYC Members $260.00, non-members $280.00

Part A: Tuesday August May 25th (Classroom), Saturday May 29th and Sunday May 30th (practical onboard).
Part A: Tuesday June 15th (Classroom), Saturday June 19th and Sunday June 20th (practical onboard).
Part A: Tuesday August 3rd (Classroom), Saturday and Sunday August 7th and 8th (practical onboard)
Part A: Tuesday September 7th (Classroom), Saturday and Sunday September 11th & 12th (practical onboard)
Part B - Tuesday August 17th (Classroom), and Saturday August 21st and Sunday August 22nd (practical onboard)
Part B - Tuesday September 28th (Classroom), and Saturday and Sunday October 2nd and 3rd (practical onboard)

* 13% HST will be added to all course fees (note there will be a HST increase in 2010)
